Corpo Iluminado

In 2001, Cristina Branco made her fifth recording in five years. Her voice has matured in that short period: she retains the freshness of the first recordings but in the low registers a new coloratura can be heard that perfectly matches the mood of the poems which she sings, with an effortless transition from melancholy to joy, from the sadness of the saudade to the rejoicing of the reunion. The maturity applies to the music as well, given that the compositions of Custódio Castelo continue to reveal new horizons for the fado. In 2000 Cristina Branco paid homage to the Netherlands, the country where she began her career and that is very devoted to her. She made a recording completely dedicated to the Dutch poet, Jan Jacob Slauerhoff, who lived for a time in Portugal. The cd Cristina Branco canta Slauerhoff achieved platinum status in 2001.

Post Scriptum

Her third record, Post Scriptum (1998) also won the prize of the Monde de la Musique, and her star was rising, as was the quality of her performances. Even after hundreds of concerts - from the Centro Cultural de Belém in Lisbon to the Festival of Edinburgh in Scotland and from the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam to tone-setting theatres in New York - Christina Branco's live performances remain the best way to experience her artistry. While on the one hand Branco embodies the modesty so intrinsic to the fado, she reveals a totally individual sensuality on the other. It is this unique combination of diametrically opposed characteristics that makes her many audiences marvel - whether they understand the words Branco is singing or not.

Murmúrios

Her second album, Murmúrios -her first CD produced in a studio- was a decided milestone in her career. For this album she received the renowned prize, Choc de l'Année du Monde de la Musique, in France in the category of world music. She was inundated by invitations for live performances and the course of her career was clarified: Cristina Branco would become a fado artist. Listen to this music to discern the rustle of leaves above an almost breathless sigh, clouds slowly drifting in a gathering dusk… that is fado… those are the murmúrios of Cristina Branco.

In 1997, a short performance on a Portuguese television program led to an invitation to perform in the Netherlands. This CD, originally published for a small group, was the result of this, her first performance as a professional singer, and it immediately became a big success.
